New Dance Craze Called “The Macarena” Sweeps Campus

Dartmouth dance parties, always known for the cutting-edge music that the ever-popular DJ’s provide, have become far more exciting recently since the introduction of the brand new dance craze called the Macarena. The Macarena is a song by a new band that just came onto the music scene called Los Del Rio, which by all accounts promises to be a group of lasting influence on American pop music. They have proven themselves with the unparalleled popularity of the new breakthrough hit that has just reached Hanover in the past few weeks. The song’s catchiness comes in part from its infectious beat, but for the most part its popularity stems from the fun synchronized dance that goes along with it. Though initial internet reports seem to indicate that the song was actually written in 1995, the reaction on campus confirms that it has hit Dartmouth sometime during the last month.

Dan Reynolds ’11, a popular DJ on campus who was most recently featured at a Collis “alternative social space party” called “Bump & Grind With Non-Alcoholic Wine,” says that the song is an unfailing crowd-pleaser. “I always pull that hot new track out whenever the dance floor gets a little sparse and people start focusing on the Twister game in the corner. These Spanish artists are new on the music scene here in the New World, but I hear they’re already big in Europe. I got the hot tip on these guys from my buddy who sent me a letter about them.” Reynolds expects to play the song several times at the Sigma Delt formal because it is such a crowd favorite, along with the other hits on his playlist such as the very recent hits Mambo No. 5 and the Cha-Cha Slide.

Some students complain that the Dartmouth student body is too much of a slave to trends, which in the isolated environment can lead to far too little diversity in music and clothing tastes. Agnes Doolittle ’12, who writes a column for the Mirror all about fashion and music, laments the “follower” attitude of many at Dartmouth. “Look, I think Baby G watches are as cute as the next girl, obviously, but people need to branch out. Do you really want to be wearing the same Juicy sweatpants and Uggs combination that everyone else has on? No way! Personally I like to rock a trucker hat with some shutter shades, you know, mix and match the latest styles to stand out from the crowd and forge a new path in fashion.” When asked if she had any information on upcoming new artists, Doolittle reported, “There’s this great underground rapper called Lil Wayne who’s apparently really hitting it big in some circles. Sure to be big at Dartmouth in six months to a year.” There is little sign, however, that Lil Wayne will ever trump the popularity of Los Del Rio, but time will tell.

In related news, the men’s crew team has just been informed that the college is coeducational. They will begin singing the new alma mater “as soon as we learn the words,” reports Arnold Jones ’10, captain of the heavyweights. “Pretty embarrassing we never realized it before! I always wondered why guys kept inviting such ugly chicks to campus.”
